WFES Day III: Talking green bonds & more on final day

On the final day of the World Future Energy Summit another 61 sessions deep-dived into various aspects of the energy transition, aspects of renewable energy and green finance. 

On the latter point, yours truly kicked off the event's green finance discussion in the day's first fireside chat with Mazin Khan, Chief Financial Officer of Masdar. 

In his opening remarks ahead of the fireside chat, Khan set the stall for the efficacy of green bonds as a financial instrument to enable the transition and bring about change in hard-to-abate sectors. 

The Masdar CFO also shared the experience of his company on its issuances of green bonds and how they continue to play a key role in making it the UAE's renewables champion

Following the opening remarks, yours truly and the Masdar executive had a wide-ranging fireside chat touching on how green bonds improve transparency, drive resource efficiency, enhance governance, and, of course, signal a commitment to the cause of lowering carbon emissions. 

We also discussed how green bonds were now mainstream and issuances of 100-years maturities - indicative of an ultra long-term commitment - are no longer the novelty headline grabbers like they used to be, but rather routine. 

Additionally, Khan also touched on the incentives for issuing green bonds ranging from attracting a wider investor base to enhancing corporate reputation. They also form part of the wider agenda that encourages the development of regulatory frameworks supportive of the green finance industry. 

As of mid-2025, Masdar has raised $2.75 billion via its own green bond issuance programme, and Khan's concluding verdict was that the future of the green bonds remains bright with the global market only expected to get bigger. 

Away from the fireside chat, the Oilholic also joined the thousands who attended the event for a visit to its exhibition floor on its final day, as the conclusion of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week approached. 

The event saw over 41,000 visitors from 114 countries and 455 exhibiting companies from 60 countries. It was also a great place to network and gain the latest energy industry insights. And on that note, its time to bid goodbye.

WFES Day II: Nexus of Next at ADSW

As the second day of the World Future Energy Summit 2026 and its programme came into its element, the Oilholic took some time out to have a walk about the event's sprawling Innovation Intelligence Hub spread over 3,600 sqm at the venue.

It's here that the forces shaping the transformation of the global energy system appear to be on full display covering all facets from technology to infrastructure, ideas for capital investment to future concepts. 

Bringing all of these facets to the foreground at the hub were over 70 startups translating breakthrough ideas into commercially viable solutions they appear to be pitching to the world. Of particular significance was an AI pavilion with over 30 companies embedding intelligence across generation, grids and demand. 

For the energy sector, AI is no longer an enabling tool - it is quite simply becoming a core infrastructure play.

Today, AI-driven optimisation can improve asset performance by up to 30%, while advanced forecasting and control systems are redefining how grids operate, balance risk and absorb variability. 

At the same time, it was observed at WFES 2026 that global investment in clean and intelligent energy start-ups now exceeds $50 billion annually, with capital flowing fastest into AI-enabled systems, hydrogen, storage and digital resilience. The good folks at the summit and the wider Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week family, as well as the hosts Masdar call it the “Nexus of Next: All Systems Go.”

This in their words is "a theme to life by reflecting a clear strategic reality: the next phase of energy systems transformation will be driven not by standalone technologies, but by integrated, intelligent, and secure systems designed to perform together, investable at scale, and ready for deployment."

As the second day progressed, 59 sessions across various WFES and ADSW content streams discussed the very forces shaping tomorrow, alongside discussions on energy transition economics and technologies. 

The discussion slants ranged from challenges and opportunities to capital investment and policy frameworks. 

The Oilholic got his summit speaking engagements underway by moderating two panels on the clean energy track. The first of these was on the subject of PV-battery storage. 

The panellists (see above) included Syed Ali Gilani, Planning and Energy Markets Director, Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, Jad Abdel Masri, Senior Director, Group Supply Chain and Procurement, Masdar, Dr. Thi Minh Phuong Nguyen, Battery Storage Systems Expert, MAI Group, Mike Sronce, Managing Director and Vice President, Sargent & Lundy and Mohammad Al Natour, Managing Director, SMA Solar Technology. 

We explored the economic drivers of grid-connected battery storage, deployment hurdles, and policy enablers positioning large-scale storage as the backbone of a clean energy future. 

The second panel touched on financing hydrogen and the innovative mechanisms that could be deployed to unlock capital in the segment. 

The panellists for this session included (see below) Dr Dimitrios Dimitriou, Group Vice President of ESG and Sustainability, EMSTEEL Group, Cornelius Matthes, CEO, Dii Desert Energy, Siddharth Malik, Managing Partner, Green Investors, Dan Feldman, Global Head of Energy, King & Spalding and Santosh Raikar, Managing Partner, Silverpeak.

Apart from discussing innovative financing structures, we also touched on risk mitigation strategies to instil investor confidence and secure guarantees necessary to scale hydrogen infrastructure. 

Elsewhere at WFES, attendees got to hear about the natural path of progression of renewable energy in the Middle East which is being led by the UAE. It appears the nation's renewable energy capacity is on track for a tenfold increase by 2040. 

And it is quite simply serving as a beacon for its peers with a pragmatic blend of traditional with renewable energy. Here's yours truly's feature on Forbes on the subject

WFES Day I: Kick-off after ADSW opening ceremony

The World Future Energy Summit 2026 - being held as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week - got underway with aplomb on Tuesday. 

Before formal proceedings began, the attendees including were treated to an opening ceremony marked by cultural performances. 

The performances were followed by a keynote address from Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of the country’s international renewable energy company Masdar, and CEO of ADNOC.

In his remarks, Al Jaber called for pragmatic thinking on the energy mix, innovation, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and continued investments in renewable energy and cleantech. Here is your truly's latest Forbes missive touching on it

The morning's proceedings also included the Zayed Sustainability Prize awarding ceremony. The prizes were handed out in various categories. These included the energy category prize, which went to Switzerland's BASE. It is a specialized partner of the United Nations Environment Programme, that offers "Cooling as a Service" or CaaS in emerging markets.

BASE's innovative business model enables a diverse range of end users of cooling systems to base their decisions on life-cycle costs rather than on the purchase price of cooling equipment. (If interested, read more about them here.)

The conclusion of the awards ceremony marked the mid-morning start of the summit with a packed agenda. 

Two of the world's most pressing topics - AI and climate change  - took centerstage at the Envision Global Technology Day, with a discussion in how technology is reshaping the future of global energy systems.

Science Based Targets Initiative's pathways for low carbon cities were also widely discussed throughout the first morning. 

Among other things, the attendees got treated to a special screening of Ocean - the powerful new documentary by Sir David Attenborough. 

The documentary was a compelling call to action that explores the beauty, fragility, and future of our oceans.

ADIPEC Days III & IV: Connecting minds. Transforming Energy

Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday - days III & IV - of ADIPEC 2024 that put us on the home stretch towards the conclusion of global event, conversations turned to a collaborative transformation of the energy mix. 

It was acknowledged that a blend of human ingenuity, finance and technology, with conducive inter-governmental policies would go a long way. 

Hence, event participants got to grips with how to make it happen along with flagging some tangible examples of successful private investments, public-private partnerships and international collaboration. 

Familiar industry subjects were also under the microscope on both days - including but not limited to - stepping up efforts on achieving global carbon neutrality, crucial role of natural gas in a future energy mix, infrastructure for alternative fuels for transportation at ports and airports, tackling methane emissions, and emerging hydrogen energy solutions. 

Speaking of hydrogen, yours truly hosted a panel on Day III titled 'Asia's role in defining the hydrogen market' with panellists - The Right Honourable Abang Johari Tun Openg, Premier of Sarawak, Malaysia, Hiroshi Matsuda, Chief Regional Officer, EMEA, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Koji Yamamoto, SVP, JOGMEC, Shoichi Kaganoi, SVP, Hydrogen & CCUS Development, INPEX and Karine Boissy-Rousseau, VP Green Gases, TotalEnergies.

We discussed how Asian countries are positioning themselves within the global hydrogen economy, focusing on their advances in production technologies and infrastructure, and the geopolitical implications of their evolving roles as both importers and exporters in the hydrogen market.

Afterall, as Asian nations start to configure their hydrogen markets, the region provides a compelling case for the development of new technologies to produce lower cost hydrogen, as well as investments in a rapid expansion of enabling infrastructure for international hydrogen trade.

And the Oilholic brought his ADIPEC 2024 engagements to a close with a panel on the 'strategic role of NGOs in unlocking energy investment for emerging economies' on the final day of the event.  

Eminent panellists for this session included Maha Attia, Head of the Strategic Planning Committee and Assistant Vice-Chairman for Foreign Trade at the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General, Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association, Huda Al Houqani, Director, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group (ADSG) and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager, Emerge.

We discussed how non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are fostering energy sector growth in developing countries by overcoming regulatory and infrastructural barriers, and how strategic collaboration with NGOs can unlock significant investment potential in emerging markets.

By collaborating with governments and industry, NGOs help to refine policies and showcase scalable clean energy projects, making emerging markets more attractive to energy companies and financial institutions. These strategic partnerships not only advance sustainable development but also enable organisations to navigate complex regulations, secure funding, and confidently enter high-growth markets.

Finally, global events like ADIPEC cannot of operate in isolation from international developments, none bigger than the 2024 US presidential election that saw Donald Trump reelected. News of the return of Trump reverberated midway through the week-long event. 

Goes without saying, his presidency will likely have a profound impact on global energy markets, as summed up by yours truly in a Forbes piece. And on that note its time to bid goodbye to Abu Dhabi folks, until next year. So keep reading, keep it here, keep it 'crude'!

ADIPEC Day I: Oil & Gas 4.0, efficiencies & VIPs

The Oilholic finds himself in the UAE for the 2019 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC), rounding up day one of the global event with more than a packed agenda to report back.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ANDOC) got things going on Monday noting how Industry 4.0 is creating a "paradigm shift in global growth and energy demand."

"Oil and gas will play, as an essential part of the broader energy mix, in enabling tomorrow’s global economy. We have to admit some realities - our industry is being disrupted by new technologies, new forms of energy, a new geopolitical order. This disruption is only beginning and will gather pace," he added. 

Rubbing shoulders with attendees, expected to number 150,000 over the next few days, were several VIPs both foreign and domestic, and day one included sessions with the OPEC Secretary General Mohammed Barkindo, Indian oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BP Boss Bob Dudley, Eni’s Claudio Descalzi, and Total’s Patrick Pouyanné to name a few.

And former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told ADIPEC attendees the post World War II "established" economic model "is under strain [and] threat" from terrorism, cyber threats & global power rivalries. 

Away from the VIPs, quite a bit of "Oil and Gas 4.0" kit was on display alongside hydrogen cars, automation equipment and analytics platforms for integrated asset management, interspersed with nuts, bolts and pipeline joints.

Finally, day one was also timed to coincide with the official launch of the Abu Dhabi oil futures, that sees ADNOC partner with exchange group ICE, major oil companies, refiners and trading house Vitol.

The idea is an ambitious one of establishing Murban – Abu Dhabi's signature crude – as a potential oil benchmark. Here is some background to the development from the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. (MS Word Download here)

Elsewhere, at the ADIPEC Awards, BP's Dudley, who is due to retire as the oil and gas major's CEO next year, was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his commitment to the energy industry.

A Toyota Mirai ride to the 'Hydrogen Society'

Its official – the Oilholic is now a self-proclaimed part member of what some might describe as the evolving Hydrogen Society; that demure lot doing their bit to reach a low carbon Alamo premised on good old H2 as their alternative to fossil fuels. Of course, that’s alongside their – shall we say – more boisterous electric and hybrid mobility solutions counterparts. 

This new membership came courtesy of an 800 km-ride between 16-18 May from Salzgitter in Northern Germany to the Danish capital Copenhagen in a Toyota Mirai; the global automaker's sedan-sized bet on yet another alternative fuel solution, with hybrid and electric cars already on its portfolio.

And along the journey this blogger saw planes, trains and automobile concepts all premised on a hydrogen-powered future, and got views on a zero-emission journey from fossil fuel retailers to politicians, engineers to scientists (see earlier posts).  

Of course, the Oilholic assumes all what you lot want to know is – how was the Mirai ride and what about the perils of big, bad hydrogen spontaneously exploding! Well, the ride was pretty smooth, and the latter point – with 2018 technology in play – comes across as a bit silly (to ‘crudely’ quote none other than a Shell executive). Of course, it was perfectly safe! But more on all that later. 

The entry point should be what is Toyota’s motivation? Agreed, others are in too. For instance Hyundai, Audi, Honda, Indian heavy vehicle manufacturers and British forklift truck-makers are all attempting to harness hydrogen for mobility, but via the Mirai, Toyota is the only mass producer of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles attempting to take things to the next level.  

The company's answer, which this blogger accepts in good faith, is that via the Mirai project – Toyota is putting forward both "a new point of discussion" on alternative fuels as well as "an additional mobility option" in its own march to a low carbon future. 

The company is quite candid that in its backing of hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles, it is not making some utopian statement about the demise of the dominant internal combustion engine (at least not yet!). Rather, Toyota – the world’s second-largest automaker with its fingers in all modes of mobility fuels including some of the world's best selling petrol cars – says hydrogen fuel cell technology is not only an option, but a viable one. 

Moving on to the car itself – Mirai's chassis might somewhat resemble the latest Toyota Prius model – but riding in it is even quieter than a Prius. Yup, apparently that is possible! 

The front wheel drive vehicle uses Toyota's Fuel Cell System (TFCS), featuring both fuel cell and hybrid technology, and incorporates the global automaker’s proprietary fuel cell (FC) stack, FC boost converter and, of course, a 5kg capacity high-pressure (@ 70 MPa/10,000 psi) hydrogen tank. 

As for those worried about the tank’s safety – it has been rigorously tested since 2012, not just to your average crash tests but has even had bullets fired at it too without failure! The TCFS emits no CO2, but water, which can be released at the press of a button. A tank full of hydrogen can take you to around 500 kms before refuelling, according to Toyota, with only water as a by-product along the way.

En route, the Mirai, by the Oilholic’s calculation, accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. The car does have a top speed of around 180 km/h, but yours truly and his companions did not attempt it. 

And over the course of 800 kms, not a single problem or glitch occurred, although a passive eye had to be kept on fuel levels, given hydrogen refuelling points are not around every corner just yet. While fuel retailers hope to change that, Toyota, for its part, hopes the Mirai will captivate drivers' imagination in the years ahead. 

Organisational take-up of the Mirai from police departments to taxi and car hire companies across Europe has been pretty positive since 2015, after the Mirai moved from pilot to initial road deployment stage. Around 5,500 have been sold globally, including 250+ in Europe. By 2020, Toyota is targeting global sales of 30,000 per year.  

What the future holds is anybody's guess, but it was an absolute pleasure to have ridden in the Mirai in order of get a first hand feel of the emerging Hydrogen Society. Oil giant Shell on revving cars up with hydrogen

After getting a glimpse of a rather splendid hydrogen fuelled train, the Oilholic next had the pleasure of being driven in a hydrogen powered electric fuel cell Toyota model - The Mirai - overnight from Salzgitter to Hamburg, Germany.

Of course, much of the drive had to do with a demonstration of the fuel medium's prowess, the car's performance (come rain or shine of which we had plenty of), and more. We'll touch on that in the next post.

But for now one question well worth asking is – for such vehicles to reach critical mass and wider public acceptance, retail points for filling up them up and keeping them running would be needed; so how is that problem going to be addressed? 

Afterall Toyota has an ambition of putting 1 million emissions free vehicles on the road per year between 2020 and 2030, and rivals such as Hyundai and Audi have plans of their own. Enter oil giant Royal Dutch Shell - which says the fuel retail industry has the answers. 

Speaking to this blogger at Shell Germany's Hamburg hub, regional Chairman Stijn van Els opined that the new "Hydrogen Economy" will indeed require a rethinking of the retail infrastructure but that's "well within the industry's scope" given that major oil and gas companies are already well on their way to exploring the alternative fuels market.

"There is no competition with fossil fuels, there is co-existence as we move to a low carbon economy and Shell is committed to expanding its hydrogen fuel sales points. Furthermore, its not a shift we are attempting on our own." 

Survey data compiled at the end of 2017 suggests Toyota's home turf – Japan – has the largest number of hydrogen fuelling stations worldwide at 91, followed by the US (61), Germany (37) and the UK (18). The German figure is already above 40, at the time of writing this post, according to van Els, and the industry veteran hopes that at a pan-European level they'll be 400 sales points by 2019. 

Fuel retailers are expected to step up to the challenge for both retail and commercial clients over the coming decade, according to Toyota, with the automaker claiming "a hydrogen facility can be integrated into an existing refuelling station as an additional fuel offering."

There is certainly evidence of that. For instance, Shell's FTSE 100 rival BP is already attempting this with electric vehicle charge points, at conventional gas stations, the most recent example being its downstream venture in Mexico. The Oilholic was given a demonstration of a fuel point setting with the Mirai en route to Hamburg via a refuelling stop at a station in Wolfsburg (See below right, click to enlarge). 

Filling up a hydrogen car was not any different from a petrol or diesel car, nor did the "pump" look all that different, even if it was pumping in compressed hydrogen instead of a petroleum product.

Of course, when the hydrogen flows into the tank there's a chilling effect on the pump handle, unlike petrol or diesel refuelling where, well, you simply hear the liquid gurgling.

It's all done in a matter of minutes, and instead of paying per litre or gallon, you pay per kilogram which is on average €9.50 in Germany, €11.50 in France, and around a same-ish post-Brexit £10 in the UK. Roughly around 5kg would constitute a tank-full equating to around 60 litres, according to a Toyota spokesperson. You do the math, but the Oilholic would leave the fuel economy firmly parked for now, and touch on it in a blog post to follow. 

So going back to van Els, Shell reckons hydrogen would "certainly" play its part in the alternative fuels market and so do the oil major's fuel retail rivals. And much of the industry, including world's top 20 fuel retailers have also said they are not averse to establishing hydrogen refuelling stations as greenfield sites as well. So it all depends on consumer take-up, but the "commitment is there", according to both Toyota and Shell. Only time will tell how it all plays out.

Turning from diesel to hydrogen trains

The Oilholic finds himself on the road again; this time roughly 570 miles east of London in Salzgitter, Germany, at a research and testing facility of rail transport solutions provider Alstom. 

The French company's testing yard is abuzz for a (relatively) new reason – one of it's most popular Coradia series trains, namely the reliable diesel work-horse the Coradia Lint 54, is about to undergo a transformation like none other.

Meet the 'Coradia iLint', a full emission-free train that runs on Hydrogen powered fuel cells (see above). It only emits steam and condensed water, and no  carbon. To get a perspective, the Oilholic was given a demonstration ride on the train over a one mile track, before its due to enter service on German public transport this year. 

For all intents and purposes, it was a smooth ride and the quietest ever rail journey this blogger has been on. In fact, were it not for the wheel friction din and movement vibration, you wouldn't hear a thing. You'd imagine reducing pollution, also means minimising noise pollution and the Coradia iLint certainly fits that box.

The interior was that of a normal train in service across European public transport networks, meaning no clunky hydrogen tanks in eyesight or internal variations. (Click image below to enlarge and get a glimpse)


According to Alstom, the prototype is powered by an electrical traction drive. Electrical energy is generated onboard in fuel cells and stored in batteries.

The fuel cell provides electrical energy by combining hydrogen stored in the train's tanks onboard with oxygen from the environment, releasing good old H2O. 

While on the test track the train touched 80 km/h, out in the real world Alstom insists it would match the performance of a Coradia diesel unit, including comparable acceleration, braking and maximum speed (of 140 km/h) with the same travel range and passenger capacity as its hydrocarbon fuelled variant. 

Two things spring to mind; first being safety and the second being the infrastructure needed to power up the new train. On the first point, an Alstom spokesperson claimed that high pressure hydrogen reservoirs are actually safer than petrol tanks in comparable hazard situations, a point also made by Japanese automaker Toyota, which has been on its own hydrogen powered vehicle pathway since 2015 via its Mirai model. The technology has been rigourously tested, both mobility providers insist. 

As for the infrastructure needed, Alstom says it is offering the "complete package" consisting of the train itself and its maintenance, and also the whole hydrogen fuelling infrastructure, taking care of all rolling stock and hydrogen related matters, leaving operators to concentrate on their "core competencies."

The company's message chimes with that of other proponents of Hydrogen – intelligent energy management coupled with emissions free mobility.

And to make the point – a Toyota Mirai pulled up alongside the Coradia iLint (see above), with perfect timing. That's all from Salzgitter, as its time to ride the Mirai around Northern Germany and beyond! Keep reading, keep it 'crude', even if the next few posts are going to about hydrogen!
