Gastech Days I & II: Powering a sustainable energy future
The tag line of the event was amplified on Tuesday and Wednesday by two top US officials, dispatched by President Donald Trump, to spread the word that energy, especially LNG, exports from the States will be a stable and reliable for a power hungry world.
That's as the proliferation of AI and hyperscale datacentres present the prospect of the world's power demand adding the entire consumption of Japan - the world's fourth-largest economy - by the end of the year to the world's current demand level. That'd be a total consumption load of 1,000 TWh, or more than double of what the planet consumed three years ago.
Renewables simply cant meet that demand, and that's where LNG exports from the US come into view, according to Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior and Chris Wright, Energy Secretary. Both officials spent plenty of time at Gastech spread over the first two days, making a case for natural gas, and indicating that the US would double its natural gas production.
Both officials also suggested that the US natural gas industry in general, and LNG in particular, were a force for good and a key enabler of the AI revolution. Here is the Oilholic's latest Forbes missive summing up the US pitch.
Away from the US position, and prior to Washington's take dominating the goings-on at Gastech 2025, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy's Minister of Environment & Energy Security launched the event on the opening morning on behalf of the host country.
“Despite the progress of the energy transition, gas will continue to be part of the EU's energy mix for decades to come. This is why the Italian government – while working to ensure that clean, safe and reliable technology such as new nuclear power meets future growing energy demand – is at the same time ensuring that gas supplies are boosted and regasification capacity is increased,” Fratin noted.
Other officials from the European Union, Nigeria, Hungary, and Türkiye, also discussed the crucial role of energy supply diversification, global cooperation, and resilient infrastructure in shaping an inclusive and balanced transformation.
In particular, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó ruffled a few feathers by noting that his country does have alternatives to Russian oil and gas imports, but chooses to rely on Moscow for strategic, cost efficiency and infrastructural reasons, and not ideological ones.
Senior industry CEO's also came calling. Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italy's Eni, told Gastech: "We want to reduce emissions, but this is not achievable overnight."You cannot do it by losing money or through subsidies and incentives. You have to make it affordable, because that is the economy - there is no other way."

A pre-departure Negroni & more ahead of Gastech 2025
So, what better way to contemplate the week that's about to follow other than over a delicious Negroni at the British Airways departure lounge dear readers.
Now depending on the energy industry or ESG [or lack of] vernacular, call natural gas an 'interim' or 'bridging' or 'destination' or whatever you wish fuel, it's err.... here to stay. Let's face it, those hyperscale datacentres that you continue to hear about on the airwaves, the telly, and all else in between are not going to be powered by renewables in totality anytime soon.
Because you and yours truly here need Grok, Gemini, Chat GPT and the wider global industrial and manufacturing complex need Industrial AI, and IIoT and more. So, they aren't going away, AI isn't going away, automation isn't going away, and well... natural gas fired power plants aren't going away either.
That's why the U.S. of A, Australia and Qatar, and pretty much all of the GECF membership are pumping billions of gas dollars (yup, its not just petrodollars) into the business. And the great and good of the industry will be in Milan, including none other than US Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
To quote the US Department of Energy, he will be there to "engage with energy ministers, nuclear and natural gas providers, members of the European Parliament and Commission, and other high-ranking officials to strengthen long-lasting partnerships and encourage countries to join the US as President [Donald] Trump builds a energy secure and prosperous future.
"This trip follows the announcement of President Trump’s Historic Trade Deal, which included an agreement from the EU to purchase $750 billion in US energy and invest $600 billion in the United States, all by 2028."
And, there you have it!
But before one takes your leave, here's a bit more pessimism on that deal via yours truly's column in Forbes, and a word on natural gas and the Middle East via Energy connects.
That's all for now folks. More musings to follow soon from Milan. Keep reading, keep it here, keep it 'crude'!

CERAWeek Days II & III: US market, BP's reset and LNG
Days II & III of CERAWeek 2025 have zipped by with plenty of soundbites, among which (1) fawning over the US as a key energy investment destination, (2) discussions over the LNG market, and (3) BP's reset chatter stood out for the Oilholic.
For much of Tuesday (Day II), all you could hear was how the US had become the prime energy investment market, since the election of Donald Trump as President. Here is your's truly's full report for the day on such quips for Energy Connects.
Chastened by a near-5% stake by activist investor Elliot Investment Management, BP's boss Murray Auchincloss spoke at CERAWeek to explain his company's reset, a return to oil and gas basics and improving company-wide efficiencies. Click here for one's Forbes piece on Auchincloss' outing in Houston.
Guyana's President Irfaan Ali came to town as well to touch upon his country's phenomenal growth in crude oil production. Its light, sweet variety of crude it appears is something that European importers simply can't get enough of.
Discourse over the importance of the global LNG market and its role in servicing the world's burgeoning power demand dominated much of Day II too, and spilled over into Wednesday (Day III).
Many delegates deliberated energy giant Shell's latest LNG demand forecast of a rise by around 60% by 2040, largely driven by economic growth in Asia, emissions reductions in heavy industry and transport as well as the impact of artificial intelligence.
The energy major reckons more than 170 million tonnes of new LNG supply are set to be available by 2030, helping to meet stronger gas demand, especially in Asia. The Oilholic also took time out for some key networking receptions and talks on both days.
The first of these engagements included listening to Indian commodities industrialist and Chairman of Vedanta Group Anil Agarwal, about his fascinating journey and the international collaborations being sought by Cairn Oil and Gas, which his group owns. (See photo above)
It was also an immense pleasure and privilege to join the Women In Energy reception at CERAWeek and learn more about the Power Play Awards by ExxonMobil. (See photo left)
The awards, in their seventh year, celebrate individuals within the LNG and decarbonization value chain.
As announced by S&P Global Vice Chairman Dan Yergin himself, the nominations for the awards are now open dear readers. The winners are expected be revealed at Gastech 2025 in Milan in September.
And finally, last but certainly not the least, this blogger also had the pleasure of listening to none other than the inimitable Harold Hamm, Chairman of Continental Resources, about his book, his journey, his company's expansion plans, US political climate and more! (See photo below)
Finally, a bit of a footnote to both days as well - a number of energy bosses, including Hamm, believe that US production would plateau by the end of the decade.
This group also includes Ryan Lance, CEO of ConocoPhillips and Vicki Hollub, CEO of Occidental, among others.
But to quote Lance: "It will be a slow decline beyond 2030. That causes some issues. Market share for OPEC+ starts rising again as US production starts to plateau and demand continues to rise as we think it will over time.
"But there's a ton of resources in the US. I've never been against this industry in terms of technology because you can always figure out a way to get more resource out of the rock."

Gastech Days III & IV: Harnessing the power of natural gas and climatetech
An action packed agenda was underpinned by several movers and shakers in the natural gas space especially LNG terminal developers and operators from Venture Global LNG to Mexico Pacific.
Meanwhile, energy major Shell emphatically declared its intentions of continuing to expand its global LNG portfolio predicated in its belief of an expected industry growth of 50% by 2040. It also noted that North America's total upcoming LNG exports alone could account for around 30% of global demand by 2030.
Many thought leaders also echoed each others' belief that decarbonizing industry and transportation would involve natural gas in close step with emerging technologies. Yours truly hosted panels on both transport sector decarbonization as well as climatetech on Thursday.
The first of these was titled - Decarbonizing heavy transportation: Collaborations to address the acceleration of climate technology solutions from development to deployment. The panellists included Sukhmal Jain, Director (Marketing) & Board Member, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Yoki Firnandi, CEO, PT Pertamina International Shipping, Meg Gentle, Executive Director, HIF Global and Mark S. Brownstein, SVP, Environmental Defense Fund.
Decarbonizing heavy transport, specifically shipping, aviation and HGV remains a key challenge in addressing climate change. The panellists discussed how to steer the transport industry to net zero by 2050, robust strategies that will be needed to stimulate supportive policies, innovation in technologies and collaboration across the value chain to drive the adoption of low- and zero-carbon fuels.
We also discussed some of the barriers to investment in zero-emissions fuelling infrastructure, including biofuels, hydrogen and clean ammonia, which can pave the way for achieving their long-term supply and the climate benefits of decarbonization and some of the incentives that may be required.
Next yours truly's attention turned to climatetech via a panel titled - Fostering greater climate technology innovation, deployment, and scale across the value chain. Eminent panellists included - Mahdi Aladel, CEO, Aramco Ventures, Paula Gant, President & CEO, GTI Energy and Vikas Dhole, Vikas Dhole, GM of Project Management, AspenTech.
Climatetech innovation holds the key to ensuring a significant decarbonization of energy systems and GHG emissions reductions.
The panel deliberated how governments, the energy value chain and the emerging climate technology market overcome challenges related to scalability, matching market demand with new energy supply and a lack of the workforce skills needed to drive further adoption and deployment of low-carbon technologies.Wednesday, September 18, 2024
